The General Census of Iraq and Its Impact on the Kurdistan Region

On November 12, 2024, the Department of Statistics and Informatics at the College of Administration and Economics, University of Duhok, hosted a discussion session titled "The General Census of Iraq and Its Impact on the Kurdistan Region" in the university's conference hall. The event was attended by Dr. Luqman Hadi, Vice President for Scientific Affairs, Dr. Bassam Ahmed, Dean of the College of Administration and Economics, Dr. Khalid Salim, a member of the Iraqi Parliament, along with several academics and university professors.

Dr. Nasr Al-Din Haj Saleh, a professor in the Department of Statistics and Informatics, opened the session with an overview of the history and significance of the general census in Iraq. He stated, "The general census in Iraq is a crucial and civilized process for gathering information across various sectors."

Following this, Dr. Azad Adel Sharif, also a faculty member in the Department of Statistics and Informatics, discussed the importance of conducting the census for developmental purposes, education, and population balance in Iraq.

In the same context, Mr. Rafi Mohammed, Head of the Public Relations Department at Duhok's Statistics Directorate, addressed the governmental procedures and guidelines for implementing the census. He elaborated on the census forms and the role of statistics employees, urging citizens to cooperate to ensure the success of this endeavor.

Additionally, Professor Khalid Ahmed, a specialist in geography, highlighted both the positive and negative impacts of the census on the Kurdistan Region, particularly regarding legal and geographical rights, and explained how the census results could be utilized to support these rights.

Concluding the session, Dr. Khalid Salim, a member of the Iraqi Parliament, spoke about the challenges Kurdish parliamentarians face in Baghdad when advocating for the rights of the Kurdistan Region. He emphasized the importance of documenting these rights following the census.

At the end of the meeting, a fruitful discussion took place among attendees, who expressed hope that all citizens would cooperate to make this significant national process a success.
